I think it is about a man who is in love with a priest. Further, I think there is an implication that the love is requited Although the lyrics were written by Bernie, a straight man, there is nothing that says a writer can or would not write about a situation from the perspective of one who is caught up in that situation. Given the close linkage between Elton and Bernie over the years, it would come as little surprise that Bernie would readily compose a lyric that expresses something Elton could relate to. I think it is one of the most lovely compositions the two teamed up on over the years.
