Feeling that a son has never lived up to his father’s expectations. Growing up, the father is ashamed toward the son, and blames him for his own failures, thus, “pulling him down to save himself”. The son, now an adult, understands how he was treated and is trying to make sense of why. The son has disowned his father who is now elderly and alone, and is paying for his treatment of others, thus, “I pull you under to save myself”.
We all interpret differently. This is my personal life experience, and this song resonates with me in this regard.
