Godsmack - I Am Lyrics Meaning

This song is all about spiritual warfare. God referred to himself as "I Am" when He spoke to Moses, hence the song title.

The devil disguises himself as an Angel of light so he can lead us down the path of destruction. This is why we see "I Am" in so many verses here. The devil wants us to think he's the true God so we follow him. He does this by twisting the truth and deceiving us with lies and false promises ("I'm gonna make you shine in everything you do. I'm here to help you see. You can rely on me."). He uses worldly vices like drugs to render us powerless and helpless so we can't fight him. Drug addiction appears to be the theme here.

The writer figures out he's been deceived and he's lost control of his life when the devil finally reveals it to him (I thought by now you'd know. I'll never let you go. It's time you recognize I Am the Devil's eyes".). Now his life is out of control and he doesn't know what to do ("This isn't the life for me. This isn't the way I want to be."). He wants to get clean but doesn't know how to.

God finally steps in to intervene and saves the writer from death and gives him a second chance at life ("Take me by my hand. And let me show you what I am. I'm taking control again. Now I know I can. Take you back to where it all began. 'Cause I am). This causes the writer to transform his life and walk away from his old destructive lifestyle. That's why the song ends with him telling the devil "This isn't the life for me. This isn't the way I want to be. And let me tell you
Death will come when I'm good and ready"
