this part could be taken literally in the sense that a sudden death occurred and from that, he found himself
or this could be taken in a metaphorical way meaning that that person is dead to him, and because of that, the person is crying. And because he removed whoever from his life, he is now a new person and therefore found "the lion" or his true self.

In the first verse, it begins with here's a story of everything we'll ever be
you can hide but some of us will never leave
and if you go I don't need those little things
they remind me of all our little dreams.
This implies that it is a flashback and happened in the past because it is a story. Obviously, it was with two people, a couple perhaps because it talks about their dreams or past dreams, of the future.

It then goes on to say Can you hear the words? All I can say
we can watch the world, even if they walk away
Forget about tomorrow, tomorrow is today
You were born a lion and a lion you will stay
This means that they, the couple, can be together even if the world does not approve. Don't care about what people think, live in the now.

The chorus implies someone wanting to show their true colors to the world. To tell them about their lives yet not be judged for it. It is made obvious they are hiding that aspect of themselves from whoever. They love this person(watch you as you sleep) as couples do when one's awake and one's sleeping as to admire their love. This is more about uniqueness and wanting to show the world who they are.
