Red Tail Lights Lyrics Meaning

From the lyrics I know that the couple is obviously breaking up because th husband seemingly cheated on his wife. However, he cheated because he was tired of her keeping him down. He doesn't want this to end now because it's already gone so far. By suggesting to "talk this thing out" I believe him to be sorry for what he had done. Furthermore he believes that this isn't entirely his fault. But unfortunately his argument is futile as she drives away.

The actual red tail lights are a symbol. By her stopping we can infer that she still has some feelings for him. The lights symbolize a second chance, a possibility of rekindling their love. To the dismay of the husband, however, she loves him in the pouring rain. It is, in fact a song about two hearts going their separate ways.
