Shawn Mendes - Bad Reputation Lyrics Meaning

Based on the music video, it looks like Shawn is falling in love with a girl with a bad reputation (obviously). It seems like her life was good, she had friends, she had everything. But then in the middle of the night, there is a car crash. There were 5 girls in the car, but only 2 are seen running from it. From that devastating loss, she started to look for approval from others, no matter what she had to do. She did things that made her feel wanted. Eventually, rumors were spread that she sleeps with everyone, so on and so on. Shawn gets to know her and realizes why she does these things. It's absolutely terrible. He doesn't care what everyone says, because he knows what really happened.

I'm curious if this is a real story from Shawn of if it's some time of metaphor.
