The song, I believe, is Vedder's cry against fame. He is fed up with people treating him like he is a god and how the fans cling to him and his every word. This constant treatment could also lead him to start feeling like he hasd no responsibilities, or, in a sense, useless. All he was doing was just begging for a moment's peace, and normalcy, which is something I relate to.
