Well the title says it.. it was a sad beautiful tragedy. This song has so much feeling.. I totally relate to it at the moment since I just recently broke up with my boyfriend. "Words, how little they mean when you're a little too late" Its just saying that the "I love yous" or comforting words do not mean anything when your breaking up.. They only say it to try to make the break up easier..
"Good girls, hopeful they'll be but lonely will wait".. The innocence that there is in such a beautiful tragic makes us girls hope for that person to come back. Especially if it was an on and off relationship.. There will always be that hope that they will come back.. But unfortunately lonely they will wait because it is unlikely to happen.

Maybe they happened too soon, were going to fast, started too late, or there where other things in the way.There is a silence and realization of what will happen so he kisses her to try to make things better or to ease the pain. However, they have given up because they dont feel that it will be worth it with the distance and timing in the way and the routine they have fallen into.
